From the 2025 model year onwards, Synology has been aligning its Plus Series with a uniform, closely integrated system environment. Building on the success of the high-performance line, the next step is now being taken: In future, the new Plus models will increasingly rely on in-house hard drives and strictly certified storage media from third-party providers. This will noticeably boost performance, reliability and support efficiency.
Advantages of the proprietary storage strategy
The manufacturer highlights the significant advantages of a more closed environment. ‘Our hard drive solution has proven its added value in a wide range of scenarios,’ explains Chad Chiang, Managing Director of Synology GmbH and Synology UK. With this expanded platform strategy, the Plus series aims to provide advanced home users and small businesses with a high level of security, performance and support quality.
New compatibility guidelines for plus devices from 2025
From 2025 onwards, only Synology hard drives and officially certified drives will be fully compatible with new Plus models. This will ensure that the full range of functions remains available for tasks such as creating storage pools and accessing support. Unlisted HDDs will still be usable, but with functional limitations, particularly with regard to advanced features and error diagnosis.
Existing plus devices remain supported
Nothing will change for Plus models released up to and including 2024 (excluding the XS Plus and rack versions). Similarly, existing data carriers can continue to be migrated to new Plus systems without restriction. This ensures a smooth transition and protects existing investments.
Improved system reliability and expanded functionality
Close integration between NAS systems and Synology HDDs significantly reduces compatibility issues. Overall performance is also noticeably improved. The coordinated system architecture also enables more accurate SSD lifetime analyses, more efficient firmware updates and additional security features. These features increase the level of data security, which is a key factor for professional and private storage environments.
Consistent performance thanks to a closed system environment
This strategy focuses on optimised hardware-software synergies, reliable storage solutions and a clearly structured platform. Users benefit from consistent performance, straightforward maintenance and an enhanced user experience.
